Production of the new flag ship model started on 1st September at BMW’s Dingolfing plant. Production director, Frank-Peter Arndt, told Automobilwoche that the line would be up to full speed in three months. The fifth generation 7-Series goes on sale on 14 November. Arndt said that the line was already delivering ‘impressive quality’.

Arndt said that, like its predecessor, the new 7-Series is a showcase of new technologies. The car is described as being the most efficient model in its class. The engine line-up will feature two gasoline engines with twin turbo charging and direct injection – a V8 developing 407 horsepower in the 750i top of the range model and a 326 horsepower in-line six-cylinder in the 740i. A newly developed 245 horsepower in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with common rail and piezo injectors  will power the new 730d. All engines meet Euro 5 emissions requirements.

Dynamic damper control and chassis control are standard on all models, while integral active steering is optional. A new generation of BMW’s iDrive will also debut on the 7-Series.

Another major feature of the 7-Series is lightweight construction. The doors, roof, engine hood, side panels and crankcase are all made of aluminium.
