In 2002 BWM set a target of selling 1.4m vehicles a year by 2008, but chief executive Helmut Panke told the meeting that he now expects that target to be reached in 2007.
He added that strong unit sales should also help increase earnings. BMW has forecast pre-tax profits of €4bn this year. First quarter results were exceptionally good thanks to a one-off gain from the sale of share in aero engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce, which netted €375m.
Sales of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brand cars rose 13.9% in the first quarter to 332,923 units. New models due this year to further boost sales include the Z4 coupé and M coupe in June and a fully redesigned 3 series coupé in September.
