This in only the 2nd generation M3 sedan – there have been four of the two-door coupe.

“With the added practicality of the four-door bodyshell, the new M3 sedan will appeal to an even broader audience,” BMW said.

Like the coupe launched earlier, the four-litre V8 engine in the sedan version develops 420hp at 8,300rpm and 400Nm of torque at 3,900rpm.

A six-speed manual gearbox and variable M differential are standard; the latter sends up to 100% of available power to the wheel with most grip.

The M3 sedan despatches the sprint from zero to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, only 0.1 seconds slower than the coupé, before going onto a limited top speed of 155mph.

Although visually similar to the regular 3-series sedan, almost all the M3 version’s body shell parts are different and it has the same, sleeker front end design from the coupe including the lowered, sportier headlamp design and power dome in the bonnet.
