BMW is raising output of the i3 electric car at its Leipzig factory as it takes the model to North America and reports continued high demand.

The company has raised output to 100 cars a day as it introduces the model to the US market.

Harald Krueger, BMW production chief, said in a statement emailed to just-auto that the company has built 5,000 i3s so far this year and that customer demand remains high.

“Customer demand for the BMW i3 remains high. Following its market launch in Europe, we are now in the process of introducing the i3 onto the US market. The USA will be the biggest market for the BMW i3. Therefore we recently increased i3 production in accordance with our plans and are currently producing around 100 cars a day,” said Krueger.

“Since the beginning of the year we have built over 5,000 i3s in our Leipzig plant. A large number of those cars are being used for test-drives or exhibition cars at the European dealers or are in transit to non-European markets.”

Late last year BM board member for sales Ian Robertson told just-auto that BMW had already accumulated 10,000 orders for the i3 car. “Not only that,” he added. “But 100,000 people have signed up for a test drive and that waiting list is going to present quite a logistical challenge for us.”
