BMW has refuted claims it could lease, not sell its Megacity Vehicle ahead of further details being revealed of the electric sub-brand on 21 February.

Media reports indicated BMW could lease rather than offer for sale its electric derivative, but the automaker has quashed the idea, noting the Megacity would be available through normal channels.

“It is definitely the case we are not planning to restrict the Megacity to lease model only,” a BMW spokesman in Munich told just-auto. “It will be offered to individuals as well as fleet customers – you will be able to buy it, lease it or whatever.

“It will be offered just like any other series vehicle. We are considering additional distribution channels on top of the usual sales channels, but by no means do we intend to not sell this vehicle.”

The spokesman added BMW would announce details of the Megactiy sub-brand on 21 February, although he declined to reveal any name in advance.

“It is something like BMW M,” he said. “It is linked to another brand but it is something different – it is marketing specific.

“We will market it under the sub-brand moniker which we will announce on 21 February.”
