Germany luxury carmaker BMW is being investigated by the Indian government for import duty violations, according to local sources in Germany.

The Indian Customs Department alleges that for many years BMW has underpaid import duties by wrongly declaring component imports as part of larger modules rather than as individual parts.

Germany’s WirtschaftsWoche weekly reported that BMW faces fines equivalent to at least EUR100m if the allegations against it are proven.
