Both BMW and Daimler are to idle factories in Germany due to slumping global demand.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung at the weekend said a Mercedes closure would begin in mid-December and plants would not re-open until 12 January.

Separately BMW has announced a four-day stop at Leipzig, in eastern Germany, which builds 1- and 3-series models.

BMW said the closure would remove 2,800 cars from the schedule. Workers would be paid normal wages but would lose overtime credits built up in the past.
