Volkswagen is planning to build a plant in Changchun, northern China, to assemble its new compact SUV, the Q5, according to a German newspaper report.


The Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper said that production of the vehicle is due to start in August 2009. It cited unspecified industry sources.


The Q5 is due to be launched in Europe this summer and in the US at the start of 2009.


It is also reported that a final decision on the China plan is yet to be made.
