Audi from September is bringing back the big five-door hatchback in the form of its new A5 Sportback, third model in a line begun with a coupé and followed up by a cabriolet.

Order books are already open for the rival to BMW’s new 5 series GT and German prices start at EUR33,650 with a cheaper entry level model to follow early next year.

The Sportback is 36mm (1.42 in) lower than the A4 sedan and seats four. Luggage compartment volume of 480 litres is close to that of the A4 Avant (wagon) and increases to 980 litres with rear seats folded.

Audi is initially offering three petrol and three diesel engines, with three more motors to follow by mid-2010.
