Spokesman Jochen Grueten told the news agency that the recall is of A3 2.0 TDI models with manual transmission built from the middle of 2003 to the end of 2004.

An Audi UK spokesman told just-auto that he understood the problem was related to the flywheel and that 2004 and 2005 model years were affected. He added that the recall was for both left- and right-hand drive cars.

Owners would be contacted and Audi dealers would carry out repairs at no cost to owners.

The AP report cited the Audi spokesman as saying that, of the 70,000 affected cars worldwide, some 20,000 are in Germany.

No injuries have been reported because of the clutch problem, the report added.
