According to a report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, around 40,000 jobs at Volkswagen’s six German plants are surplus to requirements, double the figure of 20,000 that Volkswagen has stated in the past.

The newspaper quotes sources close to the company.

On 10th February Volkswagen’s chief executive Bernd Pischetsrieder said that as part of its restructuring programme Volkswagen would be looking to reduce the workforce by around 20,000 people over the next three years. This would include administrative as well as production jobs.

The Volkswagen board is currently on its second day of a 2-day sitting.
