‘Everything is possible at Volkswagen,’ said Winterkorn.

Volkswagen has sold 857,000 cars in the first two months of the year, an increase of 7.6% compared to last year. This is despite a 16% decline in sales in German in the same period attributed the market adjusting to a new higher rate of VAT. Some 496,000 cars were sold by the Volkswagen brand in the two months.

To prove its environmental credentials, Volkswagen is premiering the Passat BlueMotion at the show. Following on from the launch of the Polo BlueMotion last summer, the Passat BlueMotion uses a variety of weight-saving and fuel-saving technologies to drastically reduce CO2 emissions. The diesel-powered car achieves average CO2 emissions of 136g/km, or 137g/km for the estate version.

Volkswagen achieves these low consumption figures through the fine tuning of the engine – a 105 bhp TDI engine with a diesel particulate filter.

Volkswagen is also launching the estate version of the Golf, with deliveries due to commence this summer.
