Volkswagen is expanding its BlueMotion line with a Sharan MPV version making its debut at the Geneva motor show next week.
BlueMotion technology lowers the seven-seater’s CO2 output while increasing efficiency.
Volkswagen Individual reduced loading on the two-litre 140PS TDI engine by fitting longer gear ratios, adjusting turbocharger boost pressure and modifying the exhaust gas recirculation system.
The location of the cooling ducts mounted on the nose of the vehicle was changed and ride height reduced 25mm resulting in the coefficient of drag falling from 0.31 to 0.29.
The result was a drop in CO2 emissions from 177g/km to 159g/km while economy rose to 45.6mpg on the EC combined test cycle.
