The new model follows a first-generation line that has sold over 1.5m units, and will continue on in sedan and wagon form after the updated hatchback arrives.

The total length of the new Fabia has increased due to a new front bumper design. External measurements are now 3,992mm long, 1,642mm wide and 1,498 high and Skoda said the hatchback is among the largest in its class with class-leading rear leg and head room. Boot capacity is 300 litres, increased to 1,163 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

The Fabia now has front and rear head airbags and rear child seats can be installed with a top-tether belt which limits the forward movement of the upper part of the seat in the event of a head-on collision.

Mechanical changes include the availability of six-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission (with a 16-valve 1.6-litre petrol engine) and electronically controlled Climatronic air conditioning is also now available.

Other new options include GSM telephone preparation with Bluetooth and MP3 iPod/player connectivity for the audio systems.

Seven engines will be available for the new Fabia – four petrol and three diesel. Both three-cylinder petrol engines have improved power and torque outputs.
