Nissan Motor on Tuesday confirmed its new global compact car would make its world debut at the Geneva motor show next month. The Leaf electric vehicle will also make its first European show appearance alongside the upcoming UK-built Juke crossover.

The global compact – replacing the current UK-built Micra, itself to be replaced on the British assembly line by the Juke revealed in Paris last week – is the first model on Nissan’s new V platform which will be shared with alliance partner Renault.

“Particular attention has been made to minimising weight on the new V platform, with the added benefits that it can bring in terms of economy and emissions,” Nissan said. “Sales will begin in Thailand in March, with European sales starting in the autumn.”

Uk car magazine Autocar today suggested Nissan’s ongoing reference to the new model as its ‘all-new global compact car’ suggested the Micra name [March in Japan] may not be carried over to the new car which, as just-auto reported from Japan last October, will be built in up to five emerging markets including Thailand, China and India.
