Hyundai Motor affiliate Kia Motors will launch its third generation Rio at the Geneva motor show next month.
The UK has been promised a five-door hatchback from September and a three-door early in 2012. SOme markets will also get a four-door sedan. Previous generations of the car, known as New Pride in Korea, have assembled and sold in China, and also in Iran by Saipa.
The completely redesigned model has 70mm longer wheelbase boosting passenger space and cargo capacity to 292 litres for the hatchback. The five-door is 55mm longer, 15mm lower and 25mm wider than its predecessor.
Petrol and diesel engine availability will vary world wide but the six motors in total will include a 70ps 1.1-litre diesel unit with CO2 emissions from 85 g/km, a 140ps 1.6 litre GDI petrol engine for North America and a new, high-performance 1.2-litre turbo GDI available from 2012.
Since launch in 2005, global sales of the current-generation Rio have exceeded 860,000 units. It was the company’s third best-selling vehicle in overseas markets during 2010 with sales of over 219,000 units. UK sales from launch total 52,626 units.
