General Motors is to cut more than 1,000 jobs in software positions across its global operations. The job cuts include more than 600 at its Warren Tech Center (just outside Detroit, Michigan).
Some reports have suggested that the number of job cuts in the software and services business unit could end up nearer to 1,500.

CNBC reported that the cuts at GM are not being driven by cost, but are the result of a review of operations that followed the departure of Mike Abbot (responsible for software and services) earlier this year, for health reasons.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the cuts follow a period of software issues for GM which have hit sales of the Chevrolet Blazer EV as well as the company’s pickups.
“As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact,” GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement emailed to the DFP.
“As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the Software and Services organization. We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead moving forward.”
