China's Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) revealed plans to establish two new design studios, in Shanghai and Los Angeles, according to local reports.
The president of the GAC Engineering Institute, Wang Qiujing, told reporters his company planned to establish two new design studios in the near future to help boost its technology research capabilities. The institute currently has 3,000 technical staff dedicated to automotive R&D.

Wang said GAC Group was looking to strengthen its capabilities in key areas of advanced automotive technologies by recruiting more domestic and overseas talent. He added that ultimately this would help strengthen sales of its Chinese made vehicles.
Key technologies that are expected to develop significantly over the next decade include smart/connected cars, autonomous vehicles and alternative fuels such electric vehicles.
GAC Group, including its joint ventures with various foreign manufacturers including Toyota, Honda, Fiat-Chrysler and Mitsubishi, sold 1,660,000 vehicles in the first 10 months of 2017 – up by almost 26% year on year.
