Chinese state-owned automaker GAC Group has begun operations at a newly completed vehicle assembly plant in Indonesia, owned by its local distributor PT Indomobil Group. The GAC Indonesia Smart Factory is located just outside Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, and has an initial production capacity of 20,000 vehicles per year, which could rise to 50,000 units per year later on depending on demand.

GAC Group confirmed that the plant is the result of “investment by Indomobil Group through its PT National Assemblers (NA) subsidiary.” The facility was completed almost exactly a year after GAC launched its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the country, the Aion Y Plus.

GAC Aion currently sells the Aion Y Plus, Aion V, and Hyptec HT models in Indonesia, all of which were previously imported from China. These will now be sourced from the local plant. In the first five months of 2025, the company sold a total of 1,845 units in Indonesia.

At the plant’s opening ceremony, GAC reaffirmed its “come to Indonesia, for Indonesia” mantra, which aligns with the GAC 2.0 global strategy aimed at promoting the development of a sustainable automotive industry.

GAC International’s President, Wei Haigang, said in a statement: “Indonesia is a key market in GAC’s global expansion and is at the forefront of our overseas development strategy. With the inauguration of PT National Assemblers’ assembly plant, we want to strengthen our contribution to economic growth, industrial quality improvement, and sustainable mobility transformation in Indonesia.”
