Until the new IS was revealed, it had not been apparent how Toyota Motor Corporation could have justified a development programme to replace the slow-selling Lexus sedan. Now, all is revealed: the car is a major a update of the seven year old model rather than a new vehicle.

TMC has gone a very job of disguising the new IS’ origins. This 4,710 mm long (+30 mm) sedan retains its 2,800 mm wheelbase but every panel is fresh and the interior has also had a comprehensive makeover.

The IS 300h remains the only hybrid (2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine+motor) and as with the current car, the new one won’t be offered in the US market. There, the 2021 model year line-up has been announced as follows:

  • IS 300, 241 hp and 258 lb ft 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, eight-speed automatic
  • IS 300 AWD, 260 hp and 236 lb ft 3.5-litre V6, six-speed automatic
  • IS 350, 311 hp and 280 lb ft 3.5-litre V6, eight-speed automatic
  • IS 350 AWD, 311 and 280 lb ft 3.5-litre V6, six-speed automatic

Given how old the new car’s platform is, TMC might either replace or phase out this just-announced model in perhaps 2023, 2024 or 2025.

Production will start soon at Tahara, the Japanese plant supplying all markets. Lexus Europe, which also has responsibility for Russia, will not be importing the new IS.
