The Citroën C4 Picasso was the first vehicle for PSA’s Efficient Modular Platform 2 lightweight architecture. Now comes the first EMP2 Peugeot model, the T9 series 308.
Peugeot claims the new 308 is 140kg lighter, version for version, than the first generation model. It will be built at the Sochaux plant in France. The Trémery and Douvrin sites will supply all of the power units, according to PSA. Build or assembly will be added in Russia, China and Argentina. Coupe (codename: R85) and convertible (R86) body styles are likely to be added from 2014.

The launch engine range will be as follows:
– 60kW/82PS 1.2 VTi
– 92kW/125PS 1.6 THP
– 115kW/150PS 1.6 THP
– 68kW/92PS 1.6 diesel (CO2 average of 93g/km)
– 85kW/115PS 1.6 diesel
The 308 will be the first Peugeot to offer PSA’s new three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine – the 1.2-litre e-THP. This will become available in the second quarter of 2014, as will the so-called BlueHDi variants, including an engine with emissions of 82g/km, plus next generation six-speed automatic gearboxes.
Inside the 308, the same ‘i-Cockpit’ design idea pioneered by the 208 features. This means a small steering wheel, an elevated instrument panel, a high centre console and a 9.7-inch touch-screen that controls many of the car’s features.
Blind Spot Monitoring, Dynamic Cruise Control, Emergency Collision Alert System and Emergency Collision Braking System will be available on the 308, as will full LED headlamps – the SEAT León was the first car in the segment to offer them and Volkswagen will also make them available on its newly announced plug-in e-Golf.
The 308 goes on sale across Europe from the fourth quarter, with cars for the UK due in showrooms in January.
