The second generation Citroën Grand C4 Picasso will have its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September. Differences over the C4 Picasso include a longer wheelbase and seven seats.

The new model should be the first PSA vehicle to use a lengthened version of the OEM’s Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2) architecture. A spokesman for the UK importer has told just-auto.com that the wheelbase of the Grand C4 Picasso measures 2,840mm, while that of the C4 Picasso is 2,785mm. Despite an extra 11cm between the wheelarches, overall length remains 2.84m thanks to a nose that is 116mm shorter than before.

Citroën says the average CO2 output starts at just 98g/km, while another variant, powered by the new BlueHDi 150 engine, emits 110g/km in conjunction with a manual transmission (117g/km for the automatic).

The new Grand C4 Picasso is claimed to be an average 100kg lighter than its predecessor, while certain e-HDi 115 versions manage to weigh 110kg less than the equivalent variants in the previous generation.

Of the total weight loss, 60kg is said to come from the decision to use aluminium and steel in the car’s platform as well as a composite rear floor. An aluminium bonnet and a composite tailgate are together claimed to save a further 40kg.

Production of the Grand C4 Picasso will be at Vigo in Spain, the same location as the standard wheelbase model.

Citroën’s spokesman says Grand C4 sales are due to commence in early 2014. UK market C4 Picasso sales start next month.
