PSA Peugeot Citroen plans to cut 5,000 jobs in France, an official from the CGT union has said, suggesting a higher proportion of layoffs in the automaker’s home country than previously disclosed.

Jean-Pierre Mercier, union representative at Peugeot’s factory in the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint Denis, told Reuters 1,900 French manufacturing jobs would be cut, along with another 3,100 in other areas.

Peugeot declined to comment on the cuts, but reiterated earlier statements that firings or voluntary departures were planned.

Last month, the automaker announced 6,000 layoffs across Europe, including 1,000 manufacturing jobs and 2,500 contractor positions.

It said at the time that the other 2,500 job cuts would come mainly in sales, marketing, IT and R&D.

Also citing union sources, Agence France-Presse, meanwhile, put the job loss tally at at least 4,000 jobs in France.

According to the CGT and CFDT unions, about 1,000 jobs will be cut in production, 500 in research and development, 400 in other departments and between 2,200 and 2,500 jobs will be cut in external partners, AFP reported.

About 1,600 of the cuts in external partners will be made in research and development, union sources told the news agency.
