A Renault union is waiting for a response to its job concerns following the automaker’s decision to site some engine production in Romania.

The French automaker is to base its H4 engine production at the Pitesti plant near Bucharest, although a Renault spokeswoman insisted today (4 April) there would be no implication for French jobs.

Nonetheless the decision has raised concerns with French union Confederation Generale du Travail (CGT) which represents a sizeable chunk of Renault’s 120,000 employees including subsidiaries, in France.

“We have put a number of questions to management about why there [Romania], about jobs and activities,” CGT Renault union central delegate Alain Mas told just-auto from France.

“We want some clarification, we want some assurances and guarantees – Renault has not responded to us at all. We have not yet…strong visibility about how this will impact on our sites either Renault or Dacia.” [Romania]

The Renault spokeswoman told just-auto earlier she was aware unions at the Douvrin plant, which produces the D4 engine had expressed worries concerning jobs, but emphasised the Romania decision would not have any effect on French domestic employment.

The CGT representative also said Renault and the unions had agreed to set up a GPEC (Gestion Previsionnel de l’Emploi et des Competences) committee to examine industrial strategy in the short and long term.

Slated to meet twice a year, the first of these meetings has yet to occur with the CGT saying it is waiting on Renault.

Coincidentally, the CGT is to meet Renault chief operating officer Patrick Pelata this Wednesday (6 April) in Paris and although the Romania situation was not due to be on the agenda, Mas confirmed the union would “seize the opportunity” to discuss the situation.
