Production of the new Smart Fortwo has started at the ‘Smartville’ production plant in Hambach, France. The last of the previous model series was produced at the end of November.

Sales in 2006 totaled 112,100 units. In view of the upcoming model changeover for the Fortwo and the phasing out of the Forfour, the result was in line with the sales target.


Since the launch of the previous model in October 1998 more than 770,000 Fortwo models have been produced in Hambach.


The new model is due to hit dealerships starting in April 2007. Starting in 2008, it will be available through official distributor channels in the US for the first time.


Smart was integrated into the Mercedes Car Group organisation during 2006.
