A so-called ‘cup’ chassis is an option with lowered ride height, stiffer springs and dampers plus 17” alloy wheels for a sharper driving experience.

Here in the UK where the current Twingo is the first offered with right-hand drive, all retail customers who order one of the new models within first 133 days of order books opening will receive a free Renaultsport trackday complete with driver training.

The new Twingo is the latest in a line of affordable performance models based on mainstream car lines – predecessors include the R8 Gordini, 5 GT Turbo and Clio Williams.

The sporty versions has new bumpers, wider front and rear wings, and sculpted side skirts and, inside,  are Renaultsport front seats with enhanced side support, aluminium pedal facings, leather steering wheel and rev-counter.

A wide range of exterior and interior Renaultsport accessories, as well as a multimedia connection point, will be available as options from launch.

ESP is standard but can be switched off for extra fun when appropriate.

The sport version has wider front and rear tracks, and the main components of its braking system are sourced from higher segment models.

The engine is a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V unit newly developed by Renault Sport Technologies with a specially developed characteristic engine note. The four-into-one exhaust manifold has been fabricated to strike a balance between acoustics, performance and low emissions.
