A range-topping diesel-electric version of the Peugeot 508 is due for launch later in 2012. The 508 HYbrid4 was mentioned by PSA Peugeot Citroen in a briefing it sent to just-auto earlier on 12 January.
The new variant is expected use the same powertrain as that of the HYbrid4 versions of the Peugeot 3008 and 508 RX4, as well as the Citroen DS5. That means a 163bhp 2.0-litre I4 turbodiesel engine which drives the front wheels, plus an electric motor which acts on the rear axle producing an additional 37bhp. The two propulsion systems allow all-wheel drive operation.
While the 508 HYbrid4 is to be manufactured alongside the existing Peugeot 508, 508 SW and 508 RX4 at the Rennes plant in France, the modular hybrid rear drive axle will be assembled and supplied from PSA’s Mulhouse facility.
