Further automotive co-operation between France and Japan has been announced with the news that Nissan will source two light commercial vehicles from French parent Renault to sell in Europe in place of its own current, ageing line-up.

Nissan will start selling own-brand versions of the Kangoo small van and Master large van models in Europe before the end of 2002 when it will stop making the Vanette and Trade vans in Spain.

In turn, Renault may market re-badged Nissan sport-utility vehicles with the newly-launched, Land Rover Freelander-sized X-Trail, already well received in Europe, the leading candidate.


Renault’s new Trafic medium size van is already the subject of a co-operative agreement – with General Motors in Europe.


The range, built by GM’s IBC plant in Luton, England, is sold as both a Renault and the Vauxhall/Opel Vivaro.
