Renault and Gestamp Solar have announced what they claim is the auto industry’s biggest solar energy project, installing roof panels at six French plants in Douai, Maubeuge, Flins, Batilly, Sandouville and Cléon.

The panels will eventually cover 450,000sq m – equivalent to about 60 football fields – and produce 60mW of electricity, enough to power a town of 15,000 people for a year.

The automaker estimated using solar energy would cut its CO2 emissions by 30,000 tonnes a year as it aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 10% by 2013 and by a further 10% between 2013 and 2016.

Installation starts mid-June and completion is scheduled for next February.
