PSA and General Motors have announced an expansion of their alliance. The partners now say they will share four platforms and expand the reach of their joint purchasing arrangement.

According to the terms of the new agreement, the firms have agreed to develop the following vehicle platforms:

  • A joint programme for a compact-class multi-purpose van for Opel/Vauxhall and a compact-class crossover utility vehicle for the Peugeot brand
  • A joint multi-purpose vehicle programme for the small car segment for Opel/Vauxhall and the Citroën brand
  • An upgraded low CO2 small car platform for Europe and other regions
  • A joint programme for mid-size cars for Opel/Vauxhall and the Peugeot and Citroen brands

The partners say they will work together to develop and launch the first vehicles on these common architectures by the end of 2016.

As for purchasing, a statement from GM and PSA states they intend to “draw on the combined purchasing reach of both companies to realise purchasing synergies benefitting both companies”. This joint purchasing organisation will be subject to customary antitrust approvals.

The companies have noted that their original annual saving projection of US$2bn within five years remains. The original partnership project was announced in February 2012.

Both General Motors and PSA say they will also now explore other cooperation opportunities.
