The Renault-Nissan Alliance has sold 200,000 electric vehicles since launching the Leaf some four years ago and is claiming a 58% share of the global EV market.

Sales in the first 10 months of this year were up 20% over the same period in 2013 at 66,500 units, the Alliance said in a statement.

Nissan has sold a cumulative 148,700 units worldwide since December 2010, when the Leaf went on sale.

The US, where 67,000 Leafs have been sold, is the group’s largest EV market, followed by Japan. The Alliance said that it plans to increase the number of quick charging stations in the US from 750 to around 1,100 by the middle of next year.

In Japan, where Leaf sales have reached 46,500 units, there are more than 2,900 quick charge stations in operation and the plan is to increase that to 6,000 by March 2015.

Renault has sold a cumulative 51,500 electric vehicles worldwide since its first model the Kangoo Z.E. went on sale in October 2011. Renault claims a 31% share of the European EV market with the Zoe sub-compact its best-seller taking a 23% market share.
