Delphi will supply an innovative, continuous cam phasing system for petrol engine versions of the new Renault Megane II, launched at the Paris motor show.  Fitted to the new 1.6-litre K4M Plus engine, it is Renault’s first cam phaser application and Delphi’s first production vane-type cam phaser.

The new system helps increase fuel economy by around 2% on NMVEG cycle, torque increase from 3 to 8% and peak power by up to 4% as well as delivering improved drivability.  It also allows the engine to meet the rigorous emissions requirements of Euro IV without EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation).  This allows a reduction in idle speed of nearly 150rpm, leading to significant fuel savings during city driving without compromising idle quality or low-speed smoothness.

The system uses hydraulic pressure to provide an inlet camshaft authority of 22.5 degrees under the control of the engine control unit (ECU).  The optimum cam angle is determined by a look-up table depending on engine load, engine speed and coolant temperature.  To advance the cam, a valve is opened to allow high-pressure oil into the drive mechanism from the engine lubrication system.  The use of aluminum for key components such as the stator and rotor have allowed a weight reduction of 30-40% compared with most comparable production systems.

For diesel versions of the new Megane II using the 1.5-litre K9K engine, Delphi will supply its second-generation common rail injection system.

The new Megane II also features a compact variable compressor for the air conditioning system.
