A short statement issued by Renault Group has just announced the immediate departure of chief operating officer Carlos Tavares.

Renault’s media release says its now former COO will “pursue other personal projects”. Carlos Ghosn, the company’s chairman and CEO, would, the statement adds, “like to thank Carlos Tavares for successfully contributing to the results of the company all along his career”.

Effective immediately, Ghosn will temporarily carry out the duties of COO.

Just two weeks ago, Tavares gave some off the cuff remarks to a reporter stating that he didn’t think he would ever run Renault but considered himself more than able to potentially lead General Motors or Ford Motor Company.

Worth noting is a rare typographical error in Renault’s English language media release (attached) issued from Paris, suggesting the announcement had to be made in haste with no time for a proof-read.
