Citroën, one of PSA Peugeot Citroën’s two car brands, says that 2001 was a fifth consecutive year of record sales, with almost 1,250,000 vehicles sold globally.

The company’s performance in Western Europe was particularly strong, with passenger car sales growing by around 13% in 2001 to an estimated 861,000 units (source: ACEA). Citroën’s share of the European car market in 2001 expanded from 5.2% to 5.8%, with the company experiencing double-digit market growth in Germany, Holland and Belgium. In the UK, sales expanded by over 50% in 2001.


Citroën’s sales in its home market of France were up by 9% to take almost 14% of the market.


The company’s sales growth was boosted by the impact of the Xsara-based Picasso compact MPV, which competes in the same segment as Renault’s Scenic and Opel/Vauxhall’s Zafira.


Industry sales estimates indicate that the arrival of the Picasso has incrementally grown Citroën sales volume by around 200,000 units, with little cannibalisation of the C-segment Xsara model with which it shares platform and much componentry.

2001 saw Citroën begin production of the Picasso in both Brazil and China, and enter new export markets in South Africa and Algeria. A new subsidiary was set up to serve the Japanese market.


The company estimates that it managed a total sales increase of over 10% in markets outside of Western Europe.
