Arkema and Hydro-Québec, through its subsidiary SCE France, say they have created a joint laboratory for research and development in the energy storage sector.

The laboratory will focus on the development of a new generation of materials for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, in particular new electrolytes such as solvents and lithium salts, as well as conduction agents, for example, carbon nanotubes and conductive polymers.

A statement from Arkema maintains the collaboration is “excellent news” for the development of hybrid and electric public as well as private transport that seeks safe, efficient and less costly technologies for the development of materials intended for Li-Ion batteries.

“This new partnership with Arkema clearly positions us as a leader in the development of promising technologies for batteries that will power tomorrow’s electric transport as well as develop energy storage systems”, said IREQ energy storage and conversion director and SCE France managing director, Karim Zaghib.

For his part, Arkema research and development VP, Christian Collette added: “Thanks to Région Aquitaine, the creation of this joint laboratory is further strengthening an already rewarding partnership with IREQ.

“It is in line with Arkema’s strategy to offer materials dedicated to the renewable energies and electric vehicle sectors.

“Our top objective is to speed up the placing on the market of new lithium salts, which have already proven their efficiency in improving the safety and power of Li-Ion batteries.”
