Ford has said it will temporarily layoff about 2,000 hourly employees at its Michigan assembly and stamping plants in Wayne. The factories are to undergo retooling to build the Ranger pickup and Bronco SUV.

In a notice filed with the state of Michigan, Ford said the layoffs will last from May 7 though to  October 22 and said the ‘mass layoff’ is considered ‘temporary’ and down to retooling.

Reports say that affected employees will receive approximately 75 percent of their take-home pay if they have one year seniority and will all return to work either at Michigan Assembly or at another Ford facility.

The new Ford Bronco SUV will go into production at the plant in 2020, while the Ranger pickup trucks are expected to enter production later this year.
