Takata airbag inflators are back in the news with Ford announcing a fourth round of recalls of vehicles fitted with the troubled and now dismembered supplier's products.
According to Ford, the latest move is "part of the fourth planned expansion of vehicles included in Takata inflator recalls described in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Takata coordinated remedy order" and is to recall vehicles with passenger frontal airbag inflators declared defective by the supplier.

"This action represents a planned expansion of previously recalled vehicles to additional model years within the geographic zones defined earlier by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration," Ford said in a statement.
This round affects about 953,000 additional including 782,384 in the United States and federal territories plus 149,652 in Canada.
Affected vehicles include:
- 2010 Ford Edge and 2010 Lincoln MKX vehicles built at the Canadian Oakville Assembly Plant from 28 November, 2008 to 12 July, 2010
- 2010-11 Ford Ranger vehicles built in the US at Twin Cities, 14 August, 2008 to 21 June, 2014
- 2010-12 Ford Fusion, 2010-12 Lincoln MKZ and 2010-11 Mercury Milan vehicles built at the Mexican Hermosillo assembly plant, 3 July, 2008 to 29 July, 2012
- 2010-14 Ford Mustang vehicles built at the Michigan Flat Rock Assembly Plant, 8 June, 2009 to 16 December, 2011
Ford said it was not aware of any injuries associated with the passenger side frontal inflators included in this "safety recall".
Dealers would replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator or module at no cost to the customer.
Reuters reported additionally some of the recalls may be limited to specific geographic areas of the US.
At least 23 people have been killed worldwide by the inflators.
Takata recalls are being phased in to the end of 2020.
