Chinese car making joint venture FAW-Volkswagen said it planned to launch 29 new vehicle models this year, including six new energy vehicles, as the company looks to continue to outperform in its domestic market.

Last week, Volkswagen Group China reported a 1.7% sales in rise new vehicle sales in China last year to 3.163m units, of which a record 2.13m vehicles were sold by FAW-Volkswagen, while the overall Chinese vehicle market declined by 8.2% to 25.769m units.

FAW-Volkswagen president Liu Yigong told reporters "2019 was an extraordinary year – we made great efforts and achieved results in brand building, systems building, digitalisation and new services".

The JV sold 1.4m Volkswagen cars last year, up by just 0.5% year on year, while Audi sales rose 4.2% to 688,888 units and the new Jetta brand sold 45,000 units.

The target for 2020 is 1.43m Volkswagen sales, 700,000 Audi sales, driven by the launch of 23 new and revised models this year, plus 200,000 Jetta sales.

The company aims to increase the number of Jetta dealerships to 285 at the end 2020 from 200 at present and recently launched three new models including a new mid size SUV.
