Faurecia says it is aiming for a 100kg weight saving per car as ever-stricter emissions legislation forces suppliers to pull even more technological rabbits from hats.

The French component producer has been focusing a laser beam onto weight as it looks to marry radical composite materials with strength and performance and, while premium manufacturers with heavier vehicles are clearly in its cross-hairs, mass producers are also eyeing the potential massive savings to be gleaned.

“Today we are able to develop our offer – we can save 100kg,” Faurecia chief technical officer Christophe Aufrere told just-auto at this week’s Paris show. “We have already demonstrated we can save 15% [weight] of all our components – whether that is interior or seating.

“We still want to see 50kg-60kg more than what we have already achieved – we can save 30% on conventional plastic [as well for example]. If you take a floor – we can save 30kg – it is a lot.”

Part of Faurecia’s push to slash weight has come from its intensive research programme which will see the supplier plough significant amounts of cash into studies and practical application of the technologies – and from the desire of OEMs for the procedures to be set in motion as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“We have OEMs which are interested – of course premium OEMs there is big pressure to decrease CO2 so weight saving is important to them. We want to develop it for mass market so others are interested – the ball is in our court.

“The target is EUR5 per kilogram saving – it is an average. Maybe we will get, or not, some others [OEMS] depending on our ability to decrease cost.

“It [technology] has been built in France, but it is not only for Renault and PSA – we want to use it wherever. Maybe we can set up in China, US, there is no issue, we want it as a worldwide force.”
