UK engine manufacturing bounced back after the Easter dip, with output up 5.5% year on year to 230,606 units, according to the SMMT.

Production for export roses 7.7% with 129,916 units destined for foreign markets, primarily in Europe.

There was also a boost in domestic demand as year to date output passed half a million by June for the first time on record.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said, "It's great to see UK engine manufacturing continue its long-term growth – a result of billions of pounds of investment into new cutting-edge technology and plants."
