UK engine output rose 3.5% year on year in November 2015 to 209,133 units. The SMMT described overall year-to-date volume as "stable" with output down 0.9% 2,216,265.

Of that tally, 1,420,932 engines (+2.3%) were exported with 795,333 (-6%) sold on the home market, primarily for English-made cars.

Major automakers producing engines in the UK include BMW, Toyota, Ford and the Ford-PSA diesel joint venture plus Jaguar Land Rover.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "Demand from overseas was again the main driving force behind UK engine production in November with a 13.3% rise in production for export outweighing a drop in domestic output.

"Engine manufacturing for the year so far remains steady, with a minimal fall compared with the same period in 2014."
