Advanced tech automotive safety systems must be precisely recalibrated after vehicular collisions an industry veteran has warned.

Janet Bigelow, a veteran auto technician at Advanced ADAS Calibration Centers (AACC), says that post-accident repair work such as welding or painting can dislodge sensitive cameras and radar sensors and that some drivers, insurers and body shop owners are unaware of this.

On a daily basis, the AACC says its technicians see vehicles in which cameras, radars and other sensors have been thrown off balance by collisions – including bumper 'love-taps' in crowded parking lots.

Bigelow maintains that drivers need to make sure blind-spot notification, automatic braking and other safety-related systems are working before the vehicle gets back out on the road.

"Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are improving the safety of US roads," Bigelow says. "But it's important to understand that they are incredibly sensitive and must be carefully scrutinized post-collision."

The AACC is the first dedicated centre in New Jersey for the maintenance, repair and calibration of ADAS for all makes and models.
