Increased vehicle complexity, rather than quality lapses, has contributed to the recent increase in the number of Toyota vehicle recalls, according to Toyota Motor Europe president Shinichi Sasaki.

“I don’t think the recalls are directly related to quality issues,” Sasaki said while attending the official opening event of Toyota’s E-GPC pan-European production training centre in Burnsaston, England, on Thursday.
“Cars are affected by many engineering and safety factors these days. For example, a few years ago most had just one airbag, now there are eight.”
He said he believed the increasing complexity of cars – and therefore more systems to go wrong – was the main reason for the rise in recalls rather than any worsening of quality.
