DaimlerChrysler UK on Wednesday confirmed that it will voluntarily recall 7,000 right-hand drive Cherokees (model year 2002 and 2003) sold in the UK as a precautionary measure to add a protective shield to the front lower control arm ball joints.

“Our ongoing quality assessments have identified that the ball joint boot may become damaged due to various factors, eventually resulting in the intrusion of moisture and evacuation of grease,” a spokesman told just-auto.

“We will be contacting all owners of affected vehicles (using Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency records) requesting that they contact their local Chrysler & Jeep dealer for this work to be carried out free of charge. Vehicles will be inspected for signs of boot damage and wear in the joint. A protective shield will be fitted and ball joints replaced if necessary.”
