PSA Peugeot Citroen has slowed output at its Vigo, Spain, car factory because of an ongoing metals industry strike in the Pontevedra province, just-auto was told on Tuesday.

“Many suppliers have not made deliveries since last Wednesday [when the action began] and this is slowing car production,” said Emilio Do Campo, secretary general for large Spanish union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), which is spearheading the strikes, continuing today.
The strikes involve 22,000 labourers and 3,500 companies, including those that make car components, have prompted violent protests in Vigo that have left many injured or jailed.
Unions want employer federations, including the largest, Asime, to negotiate higher salaries and improve safety for workers in the northwest Pontevedra region, where the largest city is Vigo.
In a statement, PSA acknowledged that the metal strikes were creating “important alterations” in its production chain. It called for metal industry workers to “show some respect” and stop blocking PSA staff from entering their factory.
Peugeot officials could not be reached for comment.
Matters could get worse if unions pursue a new 24-hour strike on Thursday that will involve all of the province’s metal workers –including those whose labour contracts are unaffected by the strikes – such as those in PSA.
