“This is a completely new four-cylinder petrol range with ‘twin pipes’ technology,” Schmidt said through an interpreter.

“They’re very smooth and powerful with low fuel consumption and lots of technology. They’re supercharged, valve controlled and have Lanchester balancer shafts.”

Schmidt also revealed the new engine range would be offered with three power ratings and “20 percent” would have direct petrol injection.

After making their debut in the C-class, the new engines would also be offered in the newly-launched E-class and an all-new CLK coupe/convertible range from autumn, Schmidt added.
