Indian car maker Tata expects its sales in Spain to double to 3,800 units in 2006, boosted by aggressive marketing efforts and the launch of the updated Safari SUV model, a company executive told just-auto late on Wednesday.

His comments came as Spanish importer Berge took over the Tata franchise after acquiring previous distributor Nissho Motor Spain for an undisclosed amount late last year.
“We are making a big bet on Tata so we are basically going to re-launch the brand,” the executive said, requesting anonymity.
Since its debut here in 1994, Tata has sold an average of 2,000 cars per year in Spain. The company is the only Indian car brand in Spain, Europe’s third-biggest car market.
To prop up sales, Berge will add new dealers to the existing 55 and spice up the vehicle model line, the executive said.
Tata currently sells the Telcoline pickup truck, Indica five-door hatchback and Indigo station wagon in Spain.
As well as planning a new marketing campaign for these vehicles, Tata will, in late February, also launch the Gran Safari SUV as its growth driver for this year, the executive added.
