GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., striving to expand export sales to counter prolonged sluggishness at home, will consider selling its newly redesigned Matiz minicar in the US only after analysing the sales performance of Smart models in the US, GM Daewoo president and CEO Nick Reilly told just-auto.
GM-Daewoo cars are sold in the US through Chevrolet and Suzuki dealers. The smallest model sold there so far is the Kalos, marketed by Chevrolet as the Aveo. Since launch in mid-2004, over 54,000 have been sold.
Reilly said the launching the Matiz in large US cities could be possible “in a couple of years” after his company’s marketing study on the potential for minicars in the US.
“We are interested to see how Smart [does] in the US market,” Reilly said in an interview ahead of a press conference to launch the Matiz in Seoul.
“Based on that, we need to do a marketing study to see if we could sell the Matiz in some of the bigger US cities such as New York and Los Angeles.”
