South Africa has been chosen by Federal Mogul Aftermarket to spearhead an international drive to increase parts sales for Asian-manufactured vehicles, writes Dave Cumming.

At the same time, the move will see the group making more efficient use of its manufacturing facilities around the world and improve its logistics information systems.
Initially, the drive will take the form of assembling a database reflecting global parts manufacturing operations and identifying areas in which new production might profitably be pursued. The entire group will have access to this database.
South Africa was chosen as the hub of this activity because it was recognised that the country already had a high number of vehicles of Asian origin in its vehicle population.
The new database will allow a Federal Mogul operation anywhere in the world to determine where in the organisation a particular part is available. It will also enable the company to identify a part which does not justify manufacture for one market alone, but which becomes a viable proposition for the global market.

By GlobalData“We might identify additional demand for a part which is already manufactured at one of FM’s worldwide facilities and facilitate increased production, taking advantage of economies of scale in the process,” says John Ellmore, marketing director of Federal Mogul Aftermarket South Africa.
He believes the project could see increased business for the company’s South African factories, which already manufacture OE and aftermarket items such as spark plugs, brake linings, gaskets and pistons for Asian vehicles.
