Auto sales in Slovenia fell 17.4% to 22,396 in January-to-April 2001 from 27,129
in January-to-April 2000, according to provisional totals provided to just-auto.com.

Volumes fell: 18.0% for cars to 21,119 from 25,757; and 6.9% for light-commercial
vehicles to 1,277 from 1,372.

In April alone, the market contracted 8.7% to 6,261 this year from 6,855 last
year. Declines registered: 19.5% for light-commercial vehicles to 318 from 395;
and 8.0% for cars to 5,943 from 6,460.

Year to date, the top brand for cars remained Renault, the only marque made
locally. VW held onto second place, while Peugeot moved into third from fifth,
bumping Fiat to fourth from third. Opel improved to fifth from sixth, while
Citroen dropped to sixth from fourth.

In 2000 versus 1999, sales contracted 20.0% to 67,609 from 84,507. Declines
amounted to: 20.3% for cars to 63,640 from 79,813; and 15.4% for light-commercial
vehicles to 3,969 from 4,694.

Slovenia, home to 1.9m people, has the highest sales per capita in Eastern
Europe.
